Traditionally Mangbetu have wrapped the heads of infants in tightly wrapped cloths to create an elongated shape of the head. This shape is further enhanced with their extended hairstyle. These rather abstract figures on top of the pot display the typical Mangbetu style. These kind of decorated pats are not really practical and were produced as a hobby, but are by now collector’s items.
