BUGLE MASK

DAN, IVORY COAST
WOOD, COWRIE SHELLS, RAFFIA, HEIGHT 35CM

Bugle masks were actually made to frighten people and displayed during pre-war ceremonies. The masks are characteristic for displaying horns on the forehead over strongly emphasised eyes and an exaggerated mouth.  The dancers traditionally created troubles and disturbances amongst  the onlookers in order to create maximum reaction. This mask is extremely well preserved.
