Dogon masks evoke the form of animals associated with their mythology. All masks have large geometric eyes and stylized features. This is a very powerful mask, emphasised by the simplicity of the design and the lovely contrast between the smooth facial parts and the foreboding rough forehead. At first sight it looks more like a monkey’s head, but the long jaw as opposed to a square mouth reveals the crocodile. This simplified stylisation is typical for all Dogon art.
