REPUBLIK OF BENIN
BRONZE, HEIGHT 41CM
This oversized leopard’s head is actually a portrait of the king. The leopard is idolised as the royal creature by the Edo speaking people in Nigeria, as well as by the Fon, which are the largest ethnic group in the Republic of Benin, and the king is compared to the leopard. The ability to create large bronze statues stems originally from the Yoruba people of Nigeria who live in the eastern part of the country.
