JOS PLATEAU, NIGERIA
TERRACOTTA, HEIGHT 30CM
1. Most people are familiar with the Nok culture, whose figures were discovered mainly in the 1950’s and later. After thorough testing it was established that they were produced around 200 – 500 BC , some were even older. Nok is also located on the Jos Plateau as were these figures, and while there are huge similarities , there are also profound differences. The style is more solid and robust and also more naturalistic. None of the figures look alike, yet their style suggests that they come from one source.
