Maternity figures are a popular theme in traditional African art.  In most cases the figures are a symbol of the original mother who gave birth to the nation or the clan. These statues were widely used at fertility ceremonies. This is an unusually large size figure with typical bold Baule raised scarifications and bulging eyes. The white paint over eyes, mouth, and skirt dramatises the effect. Excellent condition.
