DOGON, MALI
WOOD, METAL, RAFFIA, FEATHER HEIGHT 57CM
The Dogon have moved to their present location on a large plateau in the 14th century. Most villages are built into the cliffs on the southern edge. These statues are religious and cultural ancestor pieces. The sculptor evokes the spirit of the ancestors with proven traditional concepts and style. Typically in Dogon art, precedence is given to powerful form over appealing details. The statues are thought to to interpret and reflect on events in the Dogon mythology.
