BAMILEKE, CAMEROON
WOOD, HEIGHT 45CM
This is a beautifully executed carved stool. The use of three leopards to hold up the seat indicates that it was carved for the royal household, as no commoner would be allowed to associate with leopards, which were acknowledged as the animals of royalty. The different colour shades of the wood add and enhance the visual experience. A small piece of one ear is chipped off, and one of the toes is chipped a well. A strange feature is that only one off the leopard has carved toes while the other two end up in round lumps.
